The Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin warned Elias Pettersson after trading J.T. Miller to the New York Rangers.

J.T. Miller, Erik Brannstrom, and Jackson Dorrington left the team to join the New York Rangers, while Danton Heinen, Vincent Desharhnais, and Melvin Fernstrom joined the Pittsburgh Penguins. In return, Allvin acquired Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini, Marcus Pettersson, and Drew O'Connor.
Allvin offered valuable insights on what went down in the trades, notably revealing that it was never either Miller or Pettersson who would leave, it just happened that Miller ended up being the one to get traded.
In his own words:
"I wouldn't say it was one or the other. This was a conversation between myself and J.T. and his agent that started about two months ago with his health and the environment we had during the time, and during the discussions leading up to yesterday.

I felt that he probably needed a fresh start and where he was in his life and in his age and with his family that this was the best option for him and the Vancouver Canucks."

Then, he warned Pettersson that the expectations were much higher, given his massive contract and his disappointing performances so far this season.
"That's part of being a professional hockey player, especially when you commit to that kind of contract.

My expectation is higher on him than anyone else on our team, and I expect him to meet my expectation, and I expect him to meet his own expectation, and so far he has not done that.

If you talk to him, he's disappointed, but he's aware of it, and I know that he's capable, and he will work at it."
Pettersson scored only 33 points in 45 games this year, the first season of his eight-year, $11,600,000 AAV contract.
Hopefully, for the Canucks, he'll be able to find the rhythm to help his team in the playoff race.
