Zdeno Chara appears on podcast and claims the Vancouver Canucks disrespectful act cost them the Cup
The 2011 Stanley Cup Finals between the Vancouver Canucks and Boston Bruins was one of the most hotly contested series in recent memory. The two teams developed a legitimate hatred from one and other. The hatred reached a boiling point after a late hit on Nathan Horton.
The Canucks went up in the series 2-0 on home ice before arriving at the TD Garden in Boston. It was what happened in Boston that imprinted on Zdeno Chara that has stuck with the former Captain for years. Chara went onto call this the "turning point" for the Bruins and the moment the Bruins knew the series would change.
The Bruins went onto win the series in 7 games celebrating on the Canucks' Home Ice.
Chara, now retired, joined Julian Edelman's podcast to discuss what occured during that series that made it so much different. According to Chara it was the pregame antics that still remain with him.
After losing two games in Vancouver, we saw players from Vancouver coming on the ice in the Garden, and they were actually practising how they would be lifting the Cup and handing off the Cup to each other. And we found out about these things and we were like 'fuck this, we are not going to allow this to happen.' It just fueled us.
It's clear Chara and his leadership group were able to harness this anger and use it in a productive way. For what it's worth, former Canucks' player Kevin Bieksa denies this ever happening.
