Anaheim Ducks Sign Frank Vatrano to Long-Term Contract With 10 Years of Deferred Salary
The Anaheim Ducks signed the forward Frank Vatrano to a long-term contract extension with 10 years of deferred salary.
Frank Vatrano's contract was set to expire after the end of the 2024-25 NHL season, but all rumors ended on Sunday afternoon when the player signed a long-term extension with the Ducks.
The undrafted forward agreed on the terms of a three-year, $18M deal, which will kick off at the start of the next season.
The renowned insider Pierre LeBrun shed light on some interesting details regarding the deal. He stated that Vatrano's contract will carry a $4.57M AAV instead of $6M AAV because of deferred money.
Indeed, in 2035, Vatrano will receive $900,000 a year for ten years. By then, the player will live somewhere else, with taxes lower than in California.
Vatrano offered comments on his new deal:
"«I see how bright our future is and we are making turns in the right direction to ultimately bring a Stanley Cup to Anaheim. I couldn't be happier to sign a three-year extension, and I am excited to help this team grow and be a big part of our future."
A few months ago, in a paper for The Athletic, Chris Johnston revealed that using deferred money seems like a trend in the NHL, many experts believe it won't last:
"While deferred-compensation deals are clearly having their moment in the NHL - there are whispers about more of them being explored right now - the overwhelming sentiment in the industry is that they're bound to remain the outlier rather than the rule."
"Given those mutually advantageous rewards, and the recent uptick in deferred salary contracts being registered, you might think we're on the verge of a new trend that will be copied and repeated across the league."
This season, Vatrano has 20 points, including nine goals, in 37 games. He had the best season of his career last year when he had 60 points, with a career-high 37-goal tally in 82 games.
