The NHL is often quick to promote fights between players as a highlight, but on Sunday night fans were furious as officials stepped in to stop a fight.
Despite hockey being one of the most exciting sports on earth, the NHL continue to draw criticism for the way they conduct business, and on Sunday, those criticisms continued in a big way.
During a fun clash between the Los Angeles Kings and the Boston Bruins, goaltenders
Jeremy Swayman and
Darcy Kuemper were ready to face off, with the Bruins star clearly wanting the gloves to be dropped.
Unfortunately, the NHL officials stepped in and stopped the fight, which was a dreadful look for the league, especially as Kings reporter Zach Dooley pointed out the double standards from the NHL, who have continually promoted the fights at the Four Nations as a highlight of the league.
Unsurprisingly, the fans in the comment section were incredibly upset with the officials for stepping in, as it simply makes no sense for the league to allow fighting between other players, but not goaltenders.
Given that fighting is one of the most exciting parts of the sport, everyone on the ice should be able to take part, and while goalies don't often square up to fight, when they do, it would make the eventual showdown even more exciting.
Ultimately, most fans will just have to accept that the NHL simply don't want goaltenders fighting, as they've made an effort to stop them in the past and will continue to do so moving forward, but if the issues in the game are that big, they league should certainly allow them to drop the gloves when it's deemed necessary.
