The Calgary Flames have seen some big changes in the crease between the end of the 2023-24 season and the start of training camp, which has paved the way for Dustin Wolf to be on the team on a full-time basis.
Back in June, the Flames traded Jacob Markstrom to the New Jersey Devils after months of rumours surrounding the Swede's future in Calgary.
With Markstrom no longer in the organization, the Flames needed to go out and get some reinforcements. The first came before Markstrom was traded with the signing of undrafted free agent goaltender Waltteri Ignatjew, who played for Mora IK in Sweden last year.
Then on July 1st, Flames General Manager Craig Conroy went out and signed Devin Cooley to a two-year contract worth $775,000 per season.
Cooley made his preseason debut for the Flames on Monday night as they took on their provincial rival, the Edmonton Oilers. The Los Gatos, California native played the entire game for the Flames and was lights out, making 44 saves on 47 shots against an Oilers squad that had Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard playing.
After the game, Cooley met with the media and was asked if he joined the Calgary Flames because it gave him an opportunity to potentially play NHL games this season. Cooley came back with a hilarious response saying that he just wants to show that "I don't suck that much."
Cooley will likely have to settle with being the team's starter in the American Hockey League with Dustin Wolf and Dan Vladar all but confirmed as the Flames' tandem to begin the season. But if someone happens to get hurt during the year, there's no doubt he'll be the first man up from the AHL's Calgary Wranglers.
