Craig Berube had to know what he was getting into when he took over as head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Berube, who became coach of the Maple Leafs back in May following the departure of Sheldon Keefe came with a ton of experience, including winning a Stanley Cup with the St. Louis Blues in 2019. But, St. Louis is not Toronto, and things are very different when it comes to dealing with Maple Leafs reporters. Berube got his first taste of that last night.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are, once again, going into the 2024-25 season with high expectations. They've started the preseason with two straight losses to the Ottawa Senators. While not the outcome a head coach wants to see, Berube could be forgiven for his reaction when a reporter asked whether it was time to panic. The look he gave her was a good one.
The only person for the Toronto Maple Leafs to score in the latest outing against the Ottawa Senators was Alex Steeves, a player with just seven regular season NHL games under his belt. That said, several big names were absent, including Auston Matthews, John Tavares, Mitch Marner, and others.
Sheldon Keefe's departure as head coach came after yet another first-round exit from the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2024, once again at the hands of the Boston Bruins. Playoff success will be of the utmost importance for Craig Berube as he heads into his first full season as bench boss. Following Toronto's first preseason loss to the Ottawa Senators, Berube told reporters his players needed to "clean up our puck play and clean up our directness with how we want to play."
