Carolina Hurricanes top player reportedly requests a trade
The Carolina Hurricanes were hoping to get over the hump this year and make it to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 2006. However, the New York Rangers had other plans, eliminating the Hurricanes in six games in the second round.
This summer, some big changes could be coming to the Hurricanes' roster. On Friday, it was reported by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman that the Carolina Hurricanes wouldn't be offering new contracts to UFA defenceman Brett Pesce, as well as restricted free agent forward Martin Necas and now, it appears that the latter has requested a trade.
In an interview with Czech media outlet Denik Sport, Martin Necas' dad said that his son would like to be traded by the Carolina Hurricanes and wants to be on a team that will have him on the top line, as well as the first powerplay unit.
"I'll be very surprised if Martin Necas plays for Carolina in the next season. As his dad said, Martin wants to play in 1st line & 1st PP unit. His dad even said in an interview for @DenikSport:,,Martin wants to be traded.» In my eyes, Necas is a great offensive winger." Andy & Rono said in a post on X.
There certainly won't be a shortage of suitors for Martin Necas this summer. He's only 25-years-old, is coming off back-to-back 20+ goal campaigns and is getting better each season. He would fit in well with a younger team, such as the Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings or Montreal Canadiens, just to name a few, who are looking to take the next step and compete for a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
It's going to be interesting to keep an eye on this situation in the next month as we head towards the NHL Entry Draft and free agency on July 1st. Trade talks tend to pick up around those key dates and that's when we could see some action regarding Martin Necas.
