The Carolina Hurricanes reportedly were eying Edmonton Oilers RFA defenseman Evan Bouchard with an offer sheet, per a report from analyst Elliotte Friedman.
One of the bigger names in NHL free agency this year was Edmonton Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchard, who was an RFA.
Bouchard had just helped the Oilers return to the Stanley Cup Final a year after a heartbreaking 7-game loss to the Florida Panthers, but in a case of cruel irony, he and the Oilers were once again beaten by the Panthers in this year's SCF.
Bouchard will be sticking around with the Oilers, as he recently agreed to a new 4-year, $42 million deal with an AAV (average annual value) of $10.5 million. But how close was he to leaving the Oilers for the Eastern Conference?
Per a new report from NHL analyst Elliotte Friedman on his '32 Thoughts' podcast, the Carolina Hurricanes were eying Bouchard with an offer sheet, which led to the Oilers getting a new contract done relatively quickly.
Carolina did a lot of things that are now coming to the surface to show that they were willing to be aggressive. The reason Evan Bouchard's extension got done in Edmonton so quickly was because they threatened the Oilers with an offer sheet. And we'll find out someday what the truth is there.
Because the Hurricanes missed out on Bouchard, they instead acquired K'Andre Miller from the New York Rangers and then signed him to an 8-year contract. Carolina also failed to re-sign UFA defenseman Brent Burns, who joined the Colorado Avalanche on a 1-year contract to continue his NHL career at 40 years old.
Bouchard had 67 points (14G, 53A) in 82 games this year.
