Heading into the 2025 trade deadline, there were many intriguing stories around the NHL, but for the most part, fans were simply trying to find out where Mikko Rantanen would end up, as most knew he wasn't going to be a member of the Carolina Hurricanes for long.
Now, a late night/early morning report just hours before the trade deadline has confirmed exactly that, with NHL Insider Frank Seravalli revealing that as of right now, the superstar forward has been traded to the Dallas Stars.
After revealing earlier on Thursday that he's open to a sign-and-trade, Seravalli's report reveals that the deal going through hinges on an extension being in place, which would ultimately up the offer to the 'Canes.
Not long after the news broke, Jordan Schmaltz revealed that one of the pieces going back to Carolina in the deal is young star Logan Stankoven, who could thrive with a bigger role in Carolina.
Rantanen will sign an eight-year extension with the Dallas Stars.
Logan Stankoven, as well as two first round picks will be traded to Carolina in the deal:
Other smaller pieces are yet to be announced.
Now, Rantanen will line up in the same division that he spent the entirety of his career beyond the last few weeks in, and with the possibility of Colorado matching up against Dallas in round one, this could be a very dramatic post-season.
Ultimately, the decision to trade for Rantanen without an extension in place for Carolina turned out to be a bad one, but with a solid return here, they've now set themselves up for success in the future as they look to chase down that elusive Stanley Cup.
