The Dallas Stars are banking on another dynamic forward from the Western Hockey League, and this time it is Cameron Schmidt, a third-round pick from the 2025 NHL Draft.
The 5-foot-8 winger scored 40 goals and 78 points in 61 games with the Vancouver Giants, catching the attention of scouts and fans despite his smaller frame.
At the Stars' development camp in Frisco, Schmidt impressed with his quick release, strong skating, and ability to create offense in tight spaces, skills that coaches believe can translate to the NHL quickly (
Daily Faceoff).
Cameron Schmidt's speed and scoring touch could make him Dallas's next homegrown offensive weapon
Dallas has a recent history of turning draft picks into impactful forwards, from
Jason Robertson to
Wyatt Johnston, and Schmidt is viewed by many as the next in line.
According to
NHL.com, Stars scouting director Joe McDonnell called Schmidt's release and vision
«the type of skill set that can rise quickly in our system if he puts in the work.»
One Stars development coach added,
«If he keeps building strength and refining his defensive habits, Schmidt could make a push for NHL minutes sooner than most people think.»
I think Schmidt's upside is exactly the type of skill the Stars need as they try to balance a veteran roster with fresh energy.
His ability to generate offense could give Dallas another weapon down the road, especially as they try to keep pace with rivals like the Edmonton Oilers, who continue to load up on firepower.
Fans will be watching closely this fall to see if Schmidt can parlay his camp success into a legitimate roster spot or whether he'll begin the year developing further in the AHL.
