Dallas Stars face crucial decision on adding goaltending depth before the season.

The Dallas Stars open the new season with Jake Oettinger and Casey DeSmith set as their one-two punch in net, but there's a growing question about what happens if injuries strike.
Oettinger has carried a heavy load over the last three years, averaging 77 games per season when counting the playoffs. His consistency and health have been vital, but even the most durable goaltenders eventually feel the effects of such a demanding schedule.
DeSmith proved to be an excellent backup in his first season with Dallas, recording a .915 save percentage in 27 games.
He also has experience stepping in as a starter during his Pittsburgh Penguins days when injuries forced him into a bigger role.
The concern arises beyond those two. The Stars' third-string options, Remi Poirier, Ben Kraws, and Arno Tiefensee, each bring potential but also big question marks. Poirier posted a .906 save percentage in a tandem role with the Texas Stars, Kraws has minimal AHL experience despite strong ECHL numbers, and Tiefensee has shown promise in Germany but hasn't played in North America yet.

Dallas Stars must weigh the risk of relying solely on internal goalie options

With limited cap space, the Stars can't simply sign a proven veteran without considering the waiver risks. James Reimer, a 500-game NHL veteran, offers experience but would likely be claimed if sent down.
Georgi Romanov, a 25-year-old 6-foot-5 goaltender with San Jose Sharks experience, could be a smarter fit. He's posted solid numbers in a small NHL sample and might clear waivers if necessary.
As noted in The Hockey News, Dallas must find the right balance between proven depth and development opportunities.
Signing someone like Romanov could provide a safety net without disrupting Poirier's growth.
Two straight seasons of good health for Oettinger make it tempting for Dallas to stand pat, but a single injury could change everything. Depth in goal isn't just a luxury, it can be the difference between staying competitive and falling behind.
I think Dallas should add one more goalie to avoid scrambling mid-season, even if it means a tough roster decision.
