The Dallas Stars have added a new face to their forward group, and he's exactly the type of player built for playoff hockey - big, physical, and willing to do the dirty work.
Nathan Bastian's signing isn't about headline stats.
It's about adding a player who thrives in the trenches, making life difficult for opponents while opening space for his teammates.
General manager Jim Nill announced the one-year, one-way contract worth $775,000, describing the 27-year-old winger as an ideal depth addition.

At 6-foot-4 and over 200 pounds, Bastian has the frame and style that fit perfectly into a physical bottom-six role.
Originally drafted 41st overall by the New Jersey Devils in 2016, he broke into the NHL in 2019.
He had a short stint with the Seattle Kraken after being selected in the 2021 Expansion Draft, but was reclaimed by New Jersey later that season.
Over 276 regular-season games (254 with the Devils) Bastian has recorded 33 goals, 35 assists, and more than 700 hits.
Last season, he appeared in 59 games despite injuries, contributing 4 goals and 6 assists.
He also played five playoff games, bringing energy and forechecking pressure even when not on the scoresheet.
According to Breakaway on SI, his heavy game and ability to disrupt opponents make him a perfect fit for Dallas's style heading into another Stanley Cup push.
Personally, I think this is one of those low-cost signings that ends up paying big dividends when the games get tighter and more physical in April.
