The Dallas Stars didn't make headlines with a blockbuster trade or a massive extension, but their latest roster addition could be the kind of sneaky move that rattles opponents across the Central Division.

Dallas announced the signing of rugged forward Nathan Bastian to a one-year, one-way contract worth $775,000. On the surface, it looks like a depth signing, but in reality, it could give the Stars a new dimension in matchups where physicality has often tilted against them.
General manager Jim Nill emphasized in his announcement that:
«Nathan will add forward depth and a physical presence to our lineup, both of which will be valuable to our organization.»

That quote was highlighted in Reuters' coverage of the deal.

Nathan Bastian could be Dallas's under-the-radar X-factor in 2025-26

Bastian, 27, may not light up the scoresheet, but his style of play brings value that goes beyond goals and assists. Last season with the New Jersey Devils, he recorded 10 points (4 goals, 6 assists) while delivering 138 hits in just 59 games.
That kind of energy and physical grind is exactly what the Stars can use in their bottom six, especially against division rivals like Colorado and Minnesota.
As Yahoo Sports noted, Bastian's versatility makes him a unique fit for Dallas, as he can play either wing and take penalty-kill minutes when needed.
One Eastern Conference scout described his game bluntly:
«He's not flashy, but he makes life miserable for opponents.»

For a Dallas team that has struggled at times to win the «heavy» battles in playoff series, Bastian could be a puzzle piece that doesn't get much attention now, but pays dividends in April.
Personally, I think this kind of move is exactly how Jim Nill has kept the Stars' roster competitive, smart depth that can swing a game when the top stars aren't enough on their own.
