The Finnish forward could be hit with a massive fine in his home country, not for anything hockey-related, but for issues tied to Finland's mandatory military service.
According to Helsingin Sanomat, Rantanen was scheduled to begin his service in April 2024 but requested to delay his arrival. That decision has led prosecutors to argue that he failed to properly follow the order, and the penalty could total nearly $99,000.
This twist doesn't change his role in Dallas, where he is viewed as a cornerstone of the Stars' future, but it does create an unusual off-ice storyline.

The Dallas Morning News reported that Finnish officials claim Rantanen:
«has not sufficiently carefully familiarized himself with the order to commence service given to him, as a result of which he has unlawfully failed to report.»
Every Finnish male citizen over 18 is required to serve, and even delays can bring punishment.
Despite the legal matter, Rantanen is still expected to represent Finland at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Finnish hockey officials have already made clear that his status on the national team is not at risk.
As one analyst told The Hockey Writers:
«This is a bureaucratic process, not a reflection on his character or commitment.»
His contract with Dallas, carrying a $12 million cap hit, begins this fall. For a team that has made three straight trips to the Western Conference Final, keeping Rantanen focused on the ice is all that matters.
Personally, I think this situation will blow over quickly, but it does show how unique challenges can follow players even outside of hockey.
