Legendary Detroit Sports Broadcaster Shocks Fans With An Unexpected Announcement
Long-time Detroit Red Wings and Detroit area sports broadcaster John Keating shocked fans today when he revealed that he would be retiring shortly.
There will be a different feel to Detroit Red Wings broadcasts next season. Long-time play-by-play announcer John Keating, voice of both the Red Wings and Detroit Tigers for many years, announced his retirement via social media earlier today.
I've had a terrific run. I don't know that I'm the face of anything. We have a great team of people, and the fact that I've been a part of it and seen the things I've seen, I wouldn't trade it for anything.
Everybody talks about, 'I wish I were younger.' I don't have that. I wouldn't trade what I've been able to experience.
- John Keating
After a brilliant 45-year career that includes 20 Emmys, John Keating decided it was time to unplug the mic. Keating joked in the announcement that his wife, Linda, will now have to get used to seeing him around a lot more.
She's greatly distressed about the notion of having me around all the time. She would like the Red Wings to win the Stanley Cup if only to keep me away from her a little longer.
- John Keating
Keating has built a glittering career through the PASS Network days, Fox Sports Detroit, Bally Sports, and lately, FanDuel Sports to cover some of the biggest Detroit sports moments.
He covered the Stanley Cup championships with the Red Wings in 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2008; the Pistons' NBA Championship in 2004; and World Series appearances for the Tigers in 2006 and 2012.
On behalf of everyone here, congratulations to John Keating on a tremendous career. Thanks for the memories, and all the best in your retirement!
