Connor McDavid's actions after winning the Western Conference Finals shocked many fans, but now he's defended touching the Clarence Campbell Bowl.
The Edmonton Oilers came just one game shy of hoisting the Stanley Cup in 2024, and now, 12 months later, they've officially punched their ticket to the Stanley Cup Finals once again, with the familiar sight of the Florida Panthers awaiting them.
Following the game, McDavid defended his decision, noting that last year they avoided touching it and lost in the Stanley Cup Finals, so this year, he though they'd take a different approach.
"Don't touch it last year, we don't win. Touch it this year, hopefully we win."
Looking deeper into the history of the Oilers, this bodes well for the team, as one fan discovered that on every occasion they won the Cup, the Clarence Campbell Bowl was touched, but in their last two trips to the Cup Finals, they avoided touching it, so perhaps this is the luck the team needed to take them to victory.
Ultimately, it's unclear just how much any of this means, but given how superstitious hockey players have been throughout the time the sport has been around, this will certainly mean a lot to some of them, and if the Oilers get to hoist Lord Stanley in 2025, it's safe to say that this is one superstition they'll remember in the organization for a long time to come.
