Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane underwent surgery last Friday in New York City to fix two sports hernias and four muscle tears. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman shared that Kane could be back by January or February, but a new report is suggesting that it may be longer.
Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal is reporting that the loose timeline on Evander Kane's return to game action is four-to-six months. While that does line up partly with what Elliotte Friedman said yesterday, if it happens to be worst case scenario for the Oilers, they may not get Kane back until the middle of March, after the NHL's trade deadline. Matheson went on to add that they're still waiting on an official announcement from the Edmonton Oilers once doctors have consulted on his timeline.
Kane, 33, registered his ninth-career 20+ goal season during the 2023-24 campaign with the Edmonton Oilers. His 24 goals were good for fourth on the Oilers with Zach Hyman (54), Leon Draisaitl (41) and Connor McDavid (32) as the only three players ahead of him.
Losing such a key piece of their lineup is going to hurt the Edmonton Oilers, but the team has some reinforcements they hope to rely on. In the summer, the Oilers went out and signed Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson, both of whom can put the puck in the back of net and fill Kane's role.
We'll have to wait and see what the Edmonton Oilers say about Evander Kane's timeline once they release an official statement, but whether it's four, five or six months, the team is going to be counting down the days until number 91 is back on the ice.
