The Florida Panthers suffered a brutal blow at the Four Nations Face Off, with star forward Matthew Tkachuk going down with an injury.
Unfortunately, the updates didn't get any better from there, as the team placed him on LTIR, meaning that in all likelihood, his regular season in 2024/25 would be over.
Now, General Manager Bill Zito has given an update on Tkachuk's situation, and while he confirmed that he won't take part in the remainder of the regular season, he revealed that there is hope for a Stanley Cup Playoffs return.
This is a tough break for a Panthers team that were once again shaping up as Stanley Cup favourites in the Eastern Conference, and while Tkachuk's potential return in the post-season would be a boost, there has to be worry about rust and his health even if he does return.
While the Four Nations break was a huge win for the NHL, the Panthers are just one of a few teams dealing with the resulting injuries from the tournament, but given Tkachuk's role in their Cup win a year ago, no one got worse news than them from the tournament.
Ultimately though, the team is still loaded with stars like Aleksander Barkov, Sergei Bobrovsky, Sam Reinhart, Sam Bennett and Carter Verhaeghe, so while they'll no doubt be desperate to get No. 19 back on the ice, even without him they remain a highly competitive team.
