Los Angeles winger Arthur Kaliyev was the recipient of a one-year $825,000 deal earlier this week. Now the twenty-three-year-old will reportedly miss a lengthy period with what is being described as an upper-body injury.
Kaliyev was injured Friday during practice Friday. The injury is expected to require surgery and he's expected to miss a few months. The deal he signed was essentially supposed to benefit Kaliyev. If he played well, he would have theoretically forced the hand of head coach Jim Hiller, forcing him to put him into a top-nine role. He also could have been able to place himself amongst the top trade targets for general manager Rob Blake if and when the time was right this season.
However now that he will be missing a large chunk of time it is likely he will remain with the Kings for the duration of the season, having to play it out once he gets healthy enough for a return.
For his efforts last season, he experienced the worst of his career contributing fifteen points including 7 goals along with 8 assists. While those numbers seem low, it's conceivable to assume that he could become a steady and sturdy fourth-line player as his previous seasons' numbers dictate the possibility.
