Cole Caufield announces number change to honour Johnny Gaudreau
The hockey world continues to mourn the loss of Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and tributes have been pouring in from players across the National Hockey League.
Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield looked up to Johnny Gaudreau as a teenager, given the similarities between the two players. Now, the 23-year-old forward is going to be honouring Johnny Gaudreau.
In a social media post late on Tuesday night, Cole Caufield announced that he's changing from number 22 to 13 to honour Johnny Gaudreau. Caufield shared that he wore number 13 in the past because of Gaudreau and will now honour him by wearing it, adding that he's grateful to have been inspired by him growing.
"The last few years playing as #22 have been some of the best years of my life. It truly has been a dream come true and I will forever hold those memories and that number close to me. I wore #13 at a point in my career because of Johnny and now I will be wearing it again to honor him. He paved the way for smaller players and proved we had a future in this game at the highest level. I will forever be grateful to him for inspiring me and others." Caufield said.
Gaudreau and his brother Matthew passed away on Thursday night after they were struck by an alleged drunk driver while riding their bicycles home from a rehearsal dinner for their sister.
The thoughts of everyone here at Blade of Steel continue to be with the Gaudreau family at this difficult time.
