Patrik Laine is officially on the trade block. Head coach Martin St. Louis knows the Montreal Canadiens must move the winger before Friday's deadline.
Pierre LeBrun confirms a deal is imminent. Laine desperately needs a fresh start away from the intense media spotlight in Quebec. He just hasn't worked out in Montreal, despite having some nice flashes of brilliance, especially on the power play last season.
The locker room dynamic just hasn't worked. He was held scoreless through five games this season before a core muscle injury kept him off the ice.
The 27-year-old posted a -3 rating during those brief appearances. The on-ice chemistry was non-existent. Unacceptable.
Over his NHL career, the big Finn has buried 224 goals in 537 games. Teams remember that offensive output and his lethal one-timer from the left circle.
Because the Canadiens are completely willing to retain up to half of his $8.7 million cap hit, the math drastically changes. It opens doors for general managers tight against the ceiling.
And cutting his cap hit makes him an incredibly effective rental for a deep playoff run. They're circling right now due to a unique financial loophole regarding his future.
The Low-Risk Rental Blueprint
Laine hits unrestricted free agency this July. Pierre LeBrun notes it's expected his next contract can be heavily incentive-laden.
That's a massive shift in how teams view him. A front office can sign him to a low base salary packed with performance bonuses next fall.
General managers absolutely love this specific structure. It lets them pay strictly for actual production rather than a glowing past reputation.
A team can acquire him right now for a mid-round draft pick or a fringe prospect. He immediately gets a chance to rebuild his value on the man advantage.
If his crisp passing and heavy shot return to elite form, he cashes in on those future bonuses. If he struggles, the acquiring team simply walks away clean.
Montreal desperately needs this cap flexibility to upgrade their top-six forward group around Nick Suzuki. Clearing this money is a brilliant asset management play.
Expect a trade call to drop by Thursday night. The Show waits for nobody, and Laine is already packing his bags.
