The Vegas Golden Knights are under fire once again as head coach Bruce Cassidy confirmed captain Mark Stone has been placed on injured reserve.

The move comes at the most suspicious time possible. Stone left Sunday's loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins with an upper-body injury after a collision with Kris Letang, and the team officially moved him to IR on Thursday morning.
In the hockey world, this feels like a script we've all read before.
By moving Stone's $9.5 million cap hit to the shelf, the Golden Knights have opened up massive flexibility just 24 hours before the trade deadline. Fans and rival executives are already calling foul, claiming the organization is exploiting the LTIR loophole for the third consecutive season.
Whether it's tactical or terrible luck, the optics are brutal.
Stone has been elite when healthy, racking up 60 points in just 43 games this season. However, his injury history is well-documented, and he has missed a significant chunk of the second half in nearly every year of his Vegas tenure.
General Manager Kelly McCrimmon is already putting that newly found space to work.
Reports indicate Vegas is finalizing a deal for Nic Dowd from the Washington Capitals. The move addresses a desperate need for a defensive center, especially with William Karlsson still sidelined.

Mastering the cap or cheating the system?

The outcry across the league is deafening. Critics argue that Vegas is essentially "gaming" the system to build a super-team that would be illegal under normal cap constraints.
But as long as the doctors sign off, the league can't intervene.
The Golden Knights are currently in a slump, losing three straight games while sliding down the Pacific Division standings. Adding veteran depth like Dowd is a clear signal that they have no intention of playing fair in the eyes of their peers.
If Stone miraculously returns for Game 1 of the playoffs, expect the backlash to reach a fever pitch.
For now, the Golden Knights are simply following their established blueprint: win at all costs, rules be damned. The rest of the league can only watch as the "Golden Misfits" prepare to load up for another deep run.
