Yaroslav Askarov, the 11th overall pick of the Nashville Predators in 2020, has been waiting for his opportunity to become a full-time NHL goaltender. Recently, however, Nashville re-signed goalie Juuse Saros to a new eight-year deal worth over $60 million, all but guaranteeing Askarov won't be a full-timer with the Predators any time soon. His agent says it's time for a change.
Dan Milstein, who handles contracts for several Russians playing in the NHL and KHL, said in a recent interview that Askarov is going to be an elite goaltender in the NHL, and needs a team where he can get time between the pipes.
Askarov has spent the vast majority of his time in North America so far with the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL. He's played just three regular season games for the Predators since 2022, as well as one playoff game. It seems Nashville GM Barry Trotz is fine with netminder Kevin Lankinen serving as Saros's backup, further hindering Askarov's ability to get starts. There should be plenty of interest in Askarov's services, with several teams looking to become stronger in net.
Askarov has become well-known around the hockey world for his antics on the ice. That includes bench pressing his net following a shootout win, and his willingness to do whatever it takes to stop the puck from crossing the line.
