The New York Rangers fired Peter Laviolette after a disaster season, and very quickly, they have now found his replacement in a two-time Stanley Cup winner.
After reaching the Eastern Conference Finals twice in recent years, the New York Rangers had high hopes for 2024/25, but it turned out to be a devastatingly disappointing campaign for the team, and they quickly made changes.
Early in the off-season, the team parted ways with Peter Laviolette, who many believed would be the coach to help the franchise take the next step, and it appears they aren't wasting time replacing him.
As the Stanley Cup Playoffs roll on, more and more reports have now revealed that the Rangers quickly identified Mike Sullivan as their newest Head Coach, and they didn't waste any time getting into negotiations with him.
After being outbid for him in 2021 as he remained with the Pittsburgh Penguins, that didn't happen this time around, as the New York Rangers have now made the news official.
After a hot start under Laviolette, things unravelled quickly for the Rangers, and now, they've made it clear with this hire that they needed a veteran presence in the locker room to bring the talent and the personalities together to chase a Stanley Cup.
While his last three years in Pittsburgh weren't perfect, Sullivan is one of the best coaches in the NHL, and given the talent in New York, he may just be the man to bring the best out in those players.
Only time will tell if this was the right hire for New York, but given Sullivan's pedigree and the respect he commands from a locker room, he's definitely the best coach available, and now we will wait and see if this move pans out in Stanley Cup glory for the Rangers.
Contract Details to come.
