Matt Rempe was on the receiving end of a dreadful interference call on Thursday, so much so that the officials apologized to him on the ice later in the game.
It was so bad that some very high profile people and fans in general have called out the officials, with social media for once in agreement that this was a dreadful call from the officials that almost cost the Rangers a game.
However, Rangers reporter Mollie Walker has now reported on a conversation with Matt Rempe where he revealed that the officials actually came up to him later in the game and apologized for the call.
In doing so, the official noted that from his angle it looked bad, and while making a mistake is certainly understandable, the fact that none of the officials on the ice saw this one correctly and made up for it is just inexcusable.
Of course, the Minnesota Wild would go on to score a goal in the ensuing 5-on-4 powerplay opportunity, but thankfully for the Rangers, defenseman
Braden Schneider would come to the rescue and seal the 3-2 victory with an overtime winner.
Ultimately, no official is going to get every call 100% correct, as humans will always make some mistakes, but given how obvious this one was, it's another black eye for the constantly scrutinized NHL officials, and unless things somehow change under Gary Bettman, it appears that no NHL game will be called correctly in the foreseeable future.
