It looks like General Manager Bill Guerin of the Minnesota Wild has dropped the ball. Kirill Kaprizov has turned down a massive $128 million contract, left them hanging, publicly. This could be a scenario that the New York Rangers leverage to sign Kaprizov down the road.
With the news that Kirill Kaprizov won't sign a new deal in Minnesota, Bill Guerin is entering troubled waters. If he can't sign, he will have to trade the star forward.
If he can't trade him, he'll have to let him walk to free agency, a scenario of which no General Manager wants to entertain.

The New York Rangers have begun to retool the lineup, and General Manager Chris Drury hasn't finished yet. With prospects finding their way onto the lineup being a possibility, the team will look different this year.
The possibility of seeing Brett Berard, Brennan Othmann, or Gabe Perreault in the lineup is an exciting notion. But what if Chris Drury swung for the fences and reached out to the Wild?
He could ask what the cost to acquire the Russian superstar would be, but as far as developments go between the two camps on a trade, there hasn't been any traction made.
With the idea out of the door that the Wild can retain Kirill Kaprizov, it opens up the possibility of a trade, with huge implications for the New York Rangers' prospect pool, which could be tapped into if a deal were to occur.
The team will have $29.6 million in cap space available next summer, according to Sportrac.
This will give them the kind of space needed to acquire a superstar forward, and someone who could be Artemi Panarin's replacement.
Kaprizov's star has only begun to rise in the NHL as he's scored 185-201-386 in 319 games for the Wild.
The New York Rangers could find a home for Kaprizov on a line with J.T. Miller, which could make the line a dynamic two-way unit. If you watch Kaprizov's highlights, he's good at maintaining puck possession and would be a great addition to the Blueshirts' offense.
