When players know they're not really going to make it in the National Hockey League, it's not uncommon for them to pursue other playing opportunities overseas, whether that be in the KHL or some other high level professional hockey league, but this is very odd either way.
According to David Alter of Sports Illustrated and The Hockey News former Toronto Maple Leafs prospect, Brennan Menell has applied for and been granted Russian Citizenship; take a look.
First there was word that former Marlies forward Brendan Leipsic was applying for Russian citizenship. Now comes word that former Marlies D-man Brennan Menell actually got it. ⤵️ #Leafs
Menell, 26, has spent time with the Leafs, Minnesota Wild and Philadelphia Flyers organizations appearing in just 5 NHL games with the Wild during the 2019-20 season recording no points before signing in the KHL last season.
This news comes with the announcement that he signed a new 3 year extension with his KHL club, Dynamo Moscow.
Menell is a U.S Citezen, but reportedly also ignored calls to return to the U.S amid the ongoing friction in Russia. This is a really odd situation.
