Earlier in the 2024/25 season, Mitch Marner reportedly turned down a contract offer from the Toronto Maple Leafs, and now after blocking a trade to the Carolina Hurricanes, he's set to hit free agency in the summer of 2025.
When rejecting the trade, Marner made it clear that he wanted to remain in Toronto for the rest of the season, but beyond that, all options are still available, with the veteran forward not making it clear one way or another where he'll be headed as a free agent.
Now, potentially in order to publicly recruit Marner to stay, General Manager Brad Treliving has commented on the 27-year old and just how much he's valued by the franchise and in Toronto as a whole, where he's spent the entirety of his NHL career thus far.
With 21 goals and 79 points in 62 games played this season plus an assist on the Four Nations winning Canadian team, Marner has clearly hit career form right at the correct time, and in free agency, he's expected to draw immense interest from around the league.
At this stage, it's hard to tell one way or another where Marner's future lays in the NHL, but it's very easy to tell that he's valued in Toronto, and if that value extends to the contract they offer him in free agency, there's a chance he may remain a Maple Leaf for years to come.
