Brad Treliving Makes Emergency Statement About Mitch Marner
Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving felt compelled to speak out today amid ongoing rumors surrounding superstar forward Mitch Marner.
Brad Treliving and the Toronto Maple Leafs asked Mitch Marnerr on Friday if he would be willing to waive his no-trade clause.
The team would not do this unless they had a blockbuster deal on the table and that is exactly what they had as the Carolina Hurricanes were willing to send them Mikko Rantanen.
In the end, Marner refused, however, this has proven worrisome because he has yet to sign a contract extension and there are fears that he won't.
Brad Treliving addresses Mitch Marner rumors
His comments after yesterday's game against the Colorado Avalanche were even more suspect and now there is this real fear that the Leafs are going to lose their superstar forward for nothng.
With the Toronto Maple Leafs in Utah on Sunday, general manager Brad Treliving held an emergency media session with reporters where he made some interesting comments about Mitch Marner.
Essentially, he wanted to reiterate that the team's goal is to sign the forward and that it's an ongoing process that will not distract the team.
"We want Mitch here for a long time. It's not a distraction. We think the world of him, but it's just not a question we're going to get into every day. I wanted to make sure we came out, addressed it. I support Mitch 1000 per cent & he's not out here on an island with us. We're trying to worry about winning hockey games."
While it was nice of Treliving to make these comments, they likely won't quell the fears of Maple Leafs fans, anytime soon.
Overall, Marner and his camp have shown no signs of negotiating in good faith and that is a real problem.
Even if the Leafs forward does hit 100 points this season, one has to wonder if he is even worth all of the trouble.
