Former Toronto Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan is a bit of a controversial figure in Toronto, although there is no doubt his goals were well-intentioned.

Brendan Shanahan is someone who Toronto Maple Leafs fans are a bit hot and cold on these days, especially since he was fired.
For too long, Shanahan allowed former general manager Kyle Dubas to get away with bad trades and bad signings. Overall, it led to some mediocre results in the postseason, and the team never got the job done.
After months out of the spotlight, Shanahan is finally speaking out, this time for Amazon Prime's "Faceoff: Inside the NHL."

Brendan Shanahan explains what he hoped to do with the Maple Leafs

In the newest episode, Shanahan spoke about his departure from the team and the failures he oversaw during his 11-year tenure.
Overall, the former president was honest about wanting to win a Stanley Cup, while also expressing his disappointment.
I came here 11 years ago and I had really two goals: I wanted to rebuild the Toronto Maple Leafs organization, on and off the ice, and I wanted to win a Stanley Cup. I'm disappointed that I wasn't able to finish the job, but I think we've rebuilt the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Shanahan doesn't seem to be salty about what went down, noting that he still roots for the Leafs, and believes they can still win in the future.
You're going to have decisions that you'd like to have back, but I think what we've built, I'm confident that they can still get the job done. Unfortunately, I won't be around to see it finished, but it would give me a lot of joy to see them finish it... I leave here now with nothing but gratitude.

Only time will tell whether or not the Maple Leafs still truly have what it takes to be a Stanley Cup-winning franchise.
This season is going to be a big test, and the fans are eager for the regular season to begin on October 8th.
