Brian Burke is someone who has never been afraid to tell it like it is, regardless of who the target is and how they might take his opinion.
The former NHL general manager used to be in charge of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and while his tenure with the team was unsuccessful, there is no denying he left an impression.
These days, Burke plays the role of a commentator, and recently, he was asked about the Maple Leafs and some of their early-season struggles.
It led to an earnest and honest answer that may upset some Leafs players. However, it is clear that they absolutely do need to hear this right about now.
Brian Burke takes aim at the Toronto Maple Leafs
As Burke explains, it is the players who are the problem. There have been multiple coaches and general managers, yet nothing seems to work.
It doesn't matter how much they get yelled at; they can't seem to get motivated. At a certain point, the coaches can't be blamed every single time.
I don't know who will make this team go, because they've been threatened, they've been yelled at, they've been castigated, they've been criticized, and nothing seems to motivate them. And I don't think they work hard enough, and I don't think that's the coach's job. I think the coach is supposed to prepare the team... that's their goddamn job to be ready to play.
When thinking logically, it becomes clear that Brian Burke is absolutely correct, especially in the aftermath of the team's firing of Marc Savard.
The team may fire Craig Berube if things don't improve, and it just feels like it would be another example of the franchise letting the players off the hook.
Something has got to give, and at some point, the Leafs' players will have to look themselves in the mirror and figure something out, once and for all.
