Canadian Team Emerges as Favorite to Land Erik Karlsson Amid Maple Leafs Rumors
Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson has been embroiled in numerous trade rumors as of late, with the Toronto Maple Leafs getting some traction.
Erik Karlsson is still one of the best offensive defenseman in the NHL, even if he is getting a bit older. At 35 years old, he can still produce at a high level.
Overall, he is the type of player that can impact a game, and while the Pittsburgh Penguins like him, his salary is quite a burden.
This is especially true when you consider how the Penguins want to begin a rebuild, and general manager Kyle Dubas has been shopping the D-man around.
Is Erik Karlsson going back to the Ottawa Senators?
Throughout the rumor mill, the Toronto Maple Leafs have been named numerous times. However, it appears as though they are no longer a viable option.
Instead, another Canadian team from Ontario is being named. In a new discussion from the Daily Faceoff, it was revealed that the Ottawa Senators are a potential threat.
Of course, this would be a reunion of epic proportions as Karlsson's best professional seasons were with the Senators.
While the Senators are being brought up here, they are still seen as relative underdogs, all things considered.
At the end of the day, the Senators would have to give up a lot to get Karlsson, and there is no telling whether or not he is even a good fit anymore.
The Maple Leafs could use an offensive defenseman, but they don't have the assets necessary to make this happen.
Only time will tell whether or not Karlsson remains with the Penguins, going forward.
