Noah Dobson gave Martin St-Louis a fresh problem when a blocked shot turned into a hand-injury scare with bigger implications than 2 missed games.

The visible play told the story fast. Dobson stayed near the crease, took the shot off the glove side, and then headed straight off as the concern around Montreal's bench rose.
Now the conversation has shifted from simple pain to possible damage in the hand. Dr. Harjas Grewal's read was that the puck may have missed some of the padding and that the concern is a broken bone.
That does not confirm the diagnosis. It does tell you why this injury feels heavier than a routine upper-body listing.
Hand injuries can get messy for defensemen in a hurry. It is not just about whether a player can grip the stick. It is puck battles, shot blocks, breakout touches, and every little play under pressure.
That is why the range of outcomes matters so much here. Grewal pointed out that broken bones in the hand can lead to very different timelines, from playing through it to needing surgery.
The timing makes it even sharper for Montreal. Dobson was already set to be reevaluated in 2 weeks, which means this is now hanging over the end of the season and the start of the playoffs.
Seems the puck may have avoided some of the padding on the glove and so concern is a broken bone for Dobson

Broken bones in the hand can have a wide range of outcomes. I’ve had players finish games with broken bones and no specific treatment to feeling fine but needing surgery

A doctor’s take on Noah Dobson’s injury is starting to worry people

Dobson is not some extra defenseman the Canadiens can hide for a night. He played 80 games, scored 12 goals, added 35 assists, and gave Montreal major minutes across the blue line.
The other number that stands out is 188 blocked shots. That shows exactly how much trench work he was doing, and it also underlines the risk that comes with the way he plays.
For Montreal, this is where the story gets bigger than the injury clip itself. If the hand issue is minor, the club gets through it and moves on. If it is a break with a longer recovery track, the whole playoffs changes shape.
That is especially true because Dobson was brought in to solidify the back end. A defenseman with his workload touches everything in the lineup.
It also explains the quick recall of David Reinbacher. Montreal needed another right-shot option on the blue line right away once Dobson went down.
So the clean angle here is not fear for fear's sake. It is uncertainty. The visual looked bad, the medical read raised the stakes, and now the Canadiens are left waiting to learn whether Noah Dobson's injury is a short disruption or a real offseason problem.
