Craig Berube delivers difficult update on Dakota Mermis after vicious knee-on-knee hit

The end of last night's game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning was a bit of a gong show as multiple players were ejected.

It all started when Gage Goncalves of the Lightning delivered a knee-on-knee hit on Leafs defenseman Dakota Mermis. It didn't look good, and Mermis had to leave the game.

Goncalves was ejected, with Bobby McMann facing a similar fate after a slash to the head of Oliver Bjorkstrand. Meanwhile, Dakota Joshua got into a fight, which kicked him out of the game, as well.

However, the Leafs have been concerned about Mermis and his condition. After all, you never want to see a player go down in such a dramatic and awful way.

After the game, Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube spoke to the media, and he was very blunt and honest about what happened with Mermis.

When asked about the player's condition, Berube was honest and noted that the team just doesn't know right now. He still has to be evaluated by the team doctors, and that will occur on Wednesday.

Due to his ejection, Goncalves will be subjected to a review by the NHL Department of Player Safety to determine whether or not he deserves supplemental discipline.

The same thing is going to happen to McMann, who clearly slashed a Bjorkstrand in the head. Even if it is accidental, the league can't just let stuff like that go.

The DoPS has until 5 PM this evening to make a decision. If they don't say anything about the hit and the slash, then both players will be getting off without even a fine.

It's hard to say what the league is going to decide here, although if one thing is certain, it is that both of these players were ill-advised.
