Craig Berube offers a sobering update on Maple Leafs defenseman Chris Tanev

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Chris Tanev is currently dealing with another injury, and the latest update from head coach Craig Berube is not encouraging.
Chris Tanev was the best defenseman on the Toronto Maple Leafs last season, although that has not been the case throughout the 2025-26 campaign.
Overall, the defenseman has been devastated by injuries. He has had two concussions and is now dealing with a lower-body injury that requires surgery.
It is believed that Tanev is going to have to miss the rest of the regular season, which is a complete disaster for this Leafs team.
They now have to seek out a replacement, which has made the trade deadline that much more stressful for general manager Brad Treliving.
Craig Berube on Chris Tanev's potential surgery
On Saturday, Leafs head coach Craig Berube spoke to the media about Tanev, where he was asked if the defenseman is getting surgery.
As the head coach described, an official decision on that is going to be made soon, but nothing is currently set in stone.
Not yet. I'm sure that'll be soon here about what he's going to do.
Overall, this is just another disappointing bit of news for the Maple Leafs, who have not had very much luck on the injury front.
While they are starting to rack up some wins here, they would certainly love to have a guy like Tanev around for this upcoming stretch.
Only time will tell what happens with the defenseman, and if his body will hold up over the course of the rest of his contract.
