Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube spoke to the media today, and he had a lot to say about what happened to Dakota Mermis and Bobby McMann.
Monday night's Maple Leafs game against the Tampa Bay Lightning proved to be an eventful one, thanks to everything that transpired at the end of the game.
Dakota Mermis was injured by Gage Goncalves, and there was no supplemental discipline for it. Meanwhile, Bobby McMann was suspended one game for slashing Oliver Bjorkstrand.
This has led to some debate about the NHL Department of Player Safety, and whether or not they are biased against the Maple Leafs.
Today at practice, the Maple Leafs took McMann out of their rotation so that they could prepare for the inevitability of his absence at Thursday's game against the San Jose Sharks.
Craig Berube not amused with the NHL Department of Player Safety
Meanwhile, Leafs head coach Craig Berube was asked about the game's festivities, and as you can imagine, he was completely unamused.
In fact, the head coach revealed that Mermis is set to miss an entire month of action. As for McMann, Berube felt this was not suspension worthy.
It wasn't much. I thought it was more him getting bumped. I know you gotta be in control of your stick but I don't think it's worth a suspension ... We lose a guy (Mermis) for probably a month at least, there's nothing that I've heard
These are strong comments from the head coach, and you have to appreciate Berube putting himself out there and being 100 percent honest.
The decision to suspend McMann and not Goncalves is one that is going to anger a lot of people for a very long time.
Only time will tell whether or not any of these events lead to the Maple Leafs losing on home ice come Thursday.
