Darren Dreger Claims the Maple Leafs are Interested in a Forward From Brad Treliving's Past
Darren Dreger was on TSN 1050 this morning, where he claimed Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving is interested in a very controversial player.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have been on the hunt for a top-six forward for a while now, and for the most part, that hunt has been a difficult one given the thinness of the market.
General manager Brad Treliving doesn't have enough assets at his disposal to make a significant trade. Meanwhile, there aren't any viable top-six guys on the free agent market.
However, that has seemingly changed as five former NHLers have been reinstated into the NHL, as of December 1st.
As far as NHL viability is concerned, Carter Hart is at the top of the list. From there, former Calgary Flames forward Dillon Dube is not far behind.
Toronto Maple Leafs to sign Dillon Dube?
Dube played for Brad Treliving when he was the GM of the Flames. As a result, there are some rumblings that the Leafs could be showcasing interest in the forward.
In fact, Darren Dreger was on TSN 1050's 'First Up,' this morning, where he revealed Treliving's potential intentions. This report from Treliving is the closest thing we have to a confirmation that the Maple Leafs are set to pursue the controversial forward.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if [Brad] Treliving and the Toronto Maple Leafs put their hat in the ring and take a decent swing at Dillon Dube. There's history there, of course, that goes back to the Calgary days between Dube and Brad Treliving. It doesn't mean that Toronto is a frontrunner. It doesn't mean that the Leafs are going to land Dillon Dube, but I mentioned earlier about their want for a top-six forward. The assumption that a player like that could come in and fill that role.
Dube's last NHL season came in 2023-24, where he played 43 games and was only able to manage a total of seven points.
However, the season before that, Dube had 45 points in 82 games, which is certainly top-six potential. Given his status, he would be a cheap signing, and it's easy to see why Treliving would be kicking tires.
That said, Dube is a controversial player right now, and signing him would bring about a lot of bad PR. With that in mind, the Leafs are going to have to tread lightly.
