Former Toronto Maple Leafs Defenseman Promoted to Coaching Position Just Months After Being Hired
Mark Giordano has been working in the player development department for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and now, he has earned a new role with the franchise.
The last two and a half seasons of Mark Giordano's career were spent with none other than the Toronto Maple Leafs. While he didn't end playing his best hockey, he was still a serviceable D-man.
Last season, the defenseman tried to remain in the NHL, but to no avail. There weren't many takers, and he opted for a front office role.
Months ago, the Maple Leafs brought in Giordano to help out with player development. After all, player development is an area that is very important.
The rookie showcase has been going on over the past week, and as you can imagine, Giordano has been hard at work with the young players, trying to make a name for themselves.

In fact, it would appear as though the defenseman has officially been given a new role with the team, at least for the span of an entire weekend.
During the rookie tournament games against the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs, Giordano could be seen behind the bench, taking on the role of a coach.

Craig Berube does not take part in the rookie showcase festivities, as he has better things to do with those already on the roster. Having said that, putting Giordano out there made a whole lot of sense.
If you are a Toronto Maple Leafs fan, then certainly you will appreciate Giordano's service right now. Clearly, he still cares deeply about the Maple Leafs franchise.
Only time will tell whether or not he ends up on the team's coaching staff as a permanent fixture in the near future.
