Easton Cowan Addresses the Toronto Maple Leafs Trade Rumors that Disrupted His Summer
Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan was subjected to numerous trade rumors throughout the summer, and now, he can address them at training camp.
Easton Cowan is a player that a lot of fans are eager to watch this season, even if he only ends up playing for the Toronto Marlies.
The former first-round pick is currently in the midst of the preseason, where he is looking to prove himself and earn a spot on the Maple Leafs roster.
Interestingly enough, throughout the summer, Cowan had to deal with a flurry of trade rumors. The Leafs were in desperate need of a top-six forward or, at the very least, a puck-moving defenseman.
With very few assets at their disposal, it was becoming clear as day that the Toronto Maple Leafs needed to use what they have, and Cowan was a target. In the end, they opted to keep him.
Easton Cowan discusses trade rumors with Luke Fox
While speaking to Luke Fox of Sportsnet, Cowan was asked about the trade rumors and how they affected him throughout the past few months.
The forward kept an even keel about everything, noting that all he could control was himself, and that he never really felt like he was at risk of being moved.
I didn't really ever think I was gonna get traded. I knew the organization likes me here, and I love it here as well. So, very happy I didn't. I kinda focused on what I can control. Obviously, that's out of my control. Going back to London, putting in the work every day - that's what I can control. And I just focused on that.
Overall, this is an incredible mentality to have, and it shows that Cowan does, in fact, have some NHL potential in him right now.
Whether or not he can impress Craig Berube over the coming weeks still remains to be seen. Based on early production, we expect Cowan to play with the Toronto Marlies.
Regardless, he is still developing his game, and we are eager to see what he can become in the near future.
