Connor McDavid is making a lot of Edmonton Oilers fans nervous right now, although according to Elliotte Friedman, something massive is brewing in Alberta right now.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and various other teams throughout the NHL are currently focused on the situation between Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers.
McDavid could become a free agent in 2026, and there are a ton of teams out there who would love to see that happen. The Leafs are supposedly frontrunners for the Oilers captain, and you can imagine the cash they would throw at him.
Having said that, negotiations between McDavid and the Oilers are expected to be ongoing, and the hope is that something could get done before the season starts.

Elliotte Friedman with the latest on Connor McDavid

According to Elliotte Friedman on the latest episode of "32 Thoughts," there is some interesting information that is now being reported in regards to McDavid's salary.
Simply put, don't expect the forward to get an astronomical deal. Due to the length of the deal, McDavid may sign for just $15 million as opposed to the previously reported $17 million.
If McDavid signs in Edmonton, if he does, it's going to be for a lower number than we all expect, I think it's going to surprise people where it could end up
The expectation is that if McDavid does remain in Edmonton, he may only sign for two more years as he continues to assess this team's viability.
In that case, it makes sense that he would want to keep the team's costs low. However, a long-term deal means more salary cap expansion, which means a higher salary.
Overall, this is going to be an interesting situation to watch play out, and we can only imagine just how concerned some Oilers fans are right now.
If one thing is for sure, it is that Leafs fans are hoping for these negotiations to go South, and fast.
