Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews has had an incredible start to his career, and now, he is on his way to surpassing greats like Mats Sundin.

Auston Matthews is one of the best players in the entire NHL, even if the rankings around the league suggest 14 other players are better.
Since joining the Maple Leafs nine years ago, Matthews has managed to break numerous franchise records, and he is on the cusp of breaking even more.
Going into this season, the captain is feeling 100 percent again, and for the rest of the league, this is going to be a massive problem.

Auston Matthews eyes various Toronto Maple Leafs milestones

There is hope that he can return to the 69-goal pace he achieved just a few seasons ago. If he manages to get there, then he will be that much closer to the 500-goal mark.
Furthermore, there are various other records that Matthews is closing in on. For instance, the forward is close to Mats Sundin's all-time Maple Leafs goals record.
He is also very close to the all-time Power Play goals record, which may not be as hard to topple as you'd expect.
Per Leafs Latest:
Not only is Auston Matthews 20 goals away from breaking the franchise's all-time goals record of 420 held by Mats Sundin, but Matthews is also many goals and points away from tying, passing legends, and setting new franchise records.

Matthews needs 16 more power-play goals to tie Darryl Sittler, 17 to pass him, 20 to tie Mats Sundin, and 21 to break the all-time Leafs record. He's also 15 points away from passing Mitch Marner for 5th place in all-time Leafs points, and 60 points away from passing Börje Salming for 4th.

Being placed among greats like Darryl Sittler, Mats Sundin, and Borje Salming must feel pretty good. Not to mention, surpassing Mitch Marner cements him as the Leafs' most loyal soldier of the Core Four era.
Hopefully, this ends up being a season to remember for Matthews, and we get the captain of old.
