Last season, the Toronto Maple Leafs traded defenseman Connor Dewar to the Pittsburgh Penguins, which has proven to be a truly major mistake.

The Maple Leafs had to make some difficult decisions last season, especially as they looked to improve their defensive core for a deep playoff run.
In the end, the Leafs ended up trading away Connor Dewar, who had just three points in 31 games at the time of his move to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
It was a decision that had to be made, although, as it stands, the deal was not a winner for general manager Brad Treliving. Instead, it was a steal for Kyle Dubas.

Connor Dewar is killing it this season

Through 48 games this season, Dewar has 19 points, 11 of which are goals. These are sensational numbers, especially when you consider how it was unthinkable for him to do this just last season.
As one fan account noted on social media, trading Dewar is looking like a terrible decision, especially when you consider how Calle Jarnkrok could have been dealt instead.
In hindsight, maybe shouldn't have traded the 25-year-old RFA who makes $1M less in favour of keeping 33-year-old who looks washed and is probably heading to Sweden next season.
Treliving made a real mistake here, and given how Jarnkrok has been buried this season, it does feel like the Maple Leafs are going to have to trade him anyway.
To be fair, Dewar was not great last season, and it felt as though trading him was the only smart decision. It's tough, but those are the facts.
Now, Dewar is developing in front of our eyes, and the Penguins are happy to hold on to guys like that, especially towards the end of Sidney Crosby's career.
That said, Treliving will have to be smarter at the trade deadline this season, especially as the Maple Leafs remain outside of a playoff spot.
