John Tavares' Relationship with the Maple Leafs Takes a Major Turn Thanks to Mitch Marner
Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares is headed for free agency, but according to some reports, his standing in Toronto is not guaranteed whatsoever.
After scoring 38 goals at the age of 34, Toronto Maple Leafs fans were not out of their minds to assume the team would bring back John Tavares.
In fact, over the last few weeks, the conventional wisdom has been that Tavares would be a done deal to return to Toronto and that it could be a long-term deal at a moderate AAV.
However, a new report has come out stating how the veteran forward was actually about to be ousted, but Mitch Marner completely changed that.
John Tavares and the Toronto Maple Leafs
On Friday, Andy Strickland reported that Mitch Marner was officially leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs after a decade with the team.
Subsequently, he exclaimed that now the Leafs are losing Marner, they are expected to bring John Tavares back, as they need to keep some offense around.
Mitch Marner's departure could open the door for a John Tavares return. The Leafs had been expected to let the veteran walk, but that thinking has shifted with Marner on the way out.
This is a bit of a surprising report, given everyone just expected that the Maple Leafs would end up keeping Tavares around.
Tavares and Matthew Knies are the big fish to fry come July 1st, and fans are hoping that those contracts are taken care of before then.
Only time will tell whether or not Tavares ends up retiring a Leaf, or goes somewhere else, where there will be plenty of suitors.
This is going to be fascinating, and the franchise has some truly huge decisions to make.
