Kyle Dubas made a multitude of mistakes as general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, so when asked what was his biggest mistake he had plenty of things to choose from. But recently Dubas was featured in a book and finally broke his silence on the biggest mistake he made during his time in Toronto.
Dubas was recently commented by Craig Custance of The Athletic for his new book, "The Franchise: The Business Of Building Winning Teams". An ironic title for a book featuring Kyle Dubas, given his inability to build a winning team. In the book however, Dubas shares he doesn't regret signing John Tavares, but regrets the contracts he didn't sign at the same time.
Dubas shares he regrets not making more progress on all of those deals before signing Tavares, though he did talk to the trio about the impact winning the J.T. sweepstakes would have on the franchise. It's very clear that Dubas prioritized installing the finishing touches before he'd even secured his foundation.
Since arriving in Pittsburgh, Dubas has continued to make similar mistakes and even today the most important player in franchise history Sidney Crosby remains unsigned beyond this season. So if Dubas learned anything during his time in Toronto he sure hasn't shown it yet in Pittsburgh.
