Leafs Analyst Compares Auston Matthews to Patrick Mahomes, But Not in a Good Way
Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews will have to carry a large load this season, and some analysts believe it makes him the NHL's Patrick Mahomes.
Auston Matthews is one of the best players in the entire NHL; however, next season, he might just be in for a world of hurt without his superstar winger, Mitch Marner.
Although the team could put William Nylander on his line, there is no guarantee that these two will have chemistry, especially since both have a goal-first mentality.
However, with Matthews steering the ship, fans have high expectations. Not to mention, head coach Craig Berube and general manager Brad Treliving will be expecting a lot as well.
Is Auston Matthews like Patrick Mahomes?
Recently, Matthew Cauz and Michael DiStefano of TSN 1050 talked about the Maple Leafs' situation and how Matthews is going to have to be unreal next season.
Overall, they even compared him to Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes, who are big-time quarterbacks who had to deal with their teams losing skilled wide receivers.
This is not a proper analogy, it's a little bit unfair to Matthews, but it's 50-60% there. Patrick Mahomes gets paid, Josh Allen gets paid, remember that wide receiver who got paid, he's gone. It's up to Auston Matthews to take whoever the wingers are and elevate them like Crosby did with Bryan Rust, that's your job now. It's not trading for someone, it's about internal development.
While the comparison makes sense, it isn't exactly a good thing. Instead, it shifts the focus to the fact that the Leafs are depleted, and now, Matthews has to do more.
Not to mention, last season was a rough one for Matthews as he ended up dealing with an injury for most of the season. The captain was never really able to find a consistent scoring touch.
Whether or not Matthews can get back to 60 goals next season, still remains to be seen. Whatever the case may be, fans are hoping to see him back in form.
Meanwhile, Leafs fans can only hope that he starts winning championships at the same rate as Patrick Mahomes.
