Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving reportedly weighing two very different trades

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has one of the most difficult jobs in hockey, and as it stands, he is trying to improve the team immediately.
Last night, the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Chicago Blackhawks by a score of 3-2, although for 50 minutes, it was a miserable game for the Leafs.
They were down 2-0, and their best players were not putting in much of an effort. However, they turned it around, and with a tying goal from Auston Matthews and a game-winner from Dakota Joshua, the Leafs showed some resiliency.
Despite the win, it is clear that this Leafs team is not good enough to compete in the Eastern Conference, and some moves are going to have to be made.
General Manager Brad Treliving is the only one who can do this, and according to Darren Dreger, he has two very different paths that he is contemplating.
Brad Treliving has a tough task in front of him
On the latest edition of 'Insider Trading,' Dreger revealed that Treliving has narrowed down two potential trade options going into the March deadline.
He is either going to find a top-line winger to pair with the likes of Auston Matthews. Or, he is going to go out and get a top-four defenseman like Rasmus Andersson.
Overall, both of these options are pretty solid. However, it does create a conundrum for Treliving, who has a lack of assets. Not to mention, making both of these trades just feels out of the question at this point.
Help Auston Matthews or help out the defense?
Auston Matthews had one goal and one assist last night. Now, he has 14 goals and nine assists for 23 points in 27 games. While these stats aren't terrible, they're also not good enough for someone who makes $13.25 million per season.
Matthew Knies can only help so much, especially when your right-winger is another puck-dominant forward in William Nylander. Max Domi, Easton Cowan, and Matias Maccelli have all failed on the first line. With that in mind, Matthews could certainly use the help, as Mitch Marner's absence continues to become a bigger issue by the game.
Of course, the Leafs' defense hasn't been very good either. They consistently give up 30 or more shots to their opponents. Not to mention, the defensive core has been plagued by injuries.
This is why Treliving has the hardest job in hockey. Realistically, he can only fill one of these voids, and he has to figure out which one serves the Leafs the best.
