"The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that the hockey club has signed defenceman Simon Benoit to a three-year contract extension. The average annual value of the contract is $1.35 million." The team said via their official website.
The Laval, Quebec native was signed by the Maple Leafs as an unrestricted free agent in late-August, just before training camp began. Benoit was set to become a restricted free agent, but his status changed to unrestricted after his former team, the Anaheim Ducks, decided not to issue him a qualifying offer.
In 54 games for the Maple Leafs this season, the 25-year-old has recorded five points (one goal, four assists), 44 penalty minutes and is a plus-five.
