Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies remains one of the best players on the team, although it's clear that something has been bothering him lately.

If you have been watching Matthew Knies lately, you have probably noticed that he doesn't look like his usual self, even if he's still producing.
He has 46 points in 54 games, but he also has a -11 rating, which leaves a lot to be desired. Thankfully, he had a goal and an assist last night, which makes up for it.
There have been fears that Knies has been dealing with some sort of lingering injury. Given the sheer amount of practices and morning skates he has missed, it makes sense.

Matthew Knies reveals the truth

In a new report from The Athletic, Knies admitted that he is, in fact, still dealing with a knee injury right now.
He confirms that he is not at 100 percent, and that this has been affecting his play, especially when it comes to physicality.
It’s frustrating. I think a lot of the things that allow me to be a better player and to dominate is my physical attributes, and I just don’t think I have that to one hundred percent right now.

That’s what makes it frustrating: I can’t really do what I want do. It sucks when you don’t feel like yourself.
However, Knies also acknowledges that the Olympic break is good for him, as it will allow him to recover properly.
This break will be very beneficial for me because there’s not a lot of time in between games to let it heal up and take care of it.

Ultimately, the Maple Leafs are just five points out of a playoff spot, and they are currently in a perfect position to make a run.
While they might have to wait a while, they are at least within striking distance.
