Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews recently broke the franchise's scoring record, and Mitch Marner's reaction to that is just downright bizarre.

Mitch Marner is directly responsible for many of Auston Matthews' goals. In fact, when Matthews broke Mats Sundin's franchise scoring record, it was noted that Marner was the player who assisted the most on Matthews' goals.
When Matthews broke the record, he received a nice message from Mitch Marner on social media, which we actually reported on at the time.
Tonight, the Leafs are taking on the Las Vegas Golden Knights, and as you can imagine, Marner is facing the media, who have questions about his former team.
The forward was even asked about Matthews' latest achievement, although it led to a very bizarre answer that is rubbing some the wrong way.

Mitch Marner speaks on Auston Matthews' record

Essentially, Marner congratulated his good friend, but also made it clear that he had already congratulated the forward on social media. A comment that was completely unnecessary.
It was phenomenal. It was really cool. I knew it was gonna happen in a matter of time. I think everyone saw me congratulate him online but I talked to him after the game and just said 'congrats, what a great milestone'. He's got his name with all the legends now and above them all, it's a really cool thing and I think it was really cool for all the legends to recognize it and give him his love too.
It almost feels like Marner is on the defensive at all times. He has a constant chip on his shoulder, and it doesn't work out very well for him.
Going into tonight's game, there are a lot of Leafs fans who want to see him get crushed. Given how he responds to pressure, that might just happen.
Overall, this is going to be a fascinating game, and the Leafs will be as motivated as ever to pull out a win at a critical point in the season.
If they do get the win, then Marner will feel that much more pressure when he returns to Toronto next week.
