Mitch Marner shuts down the media seconds into his first media availability

Mitch Marner already appears to be in mid-season form as the Maple Leafs forward attended the first day of camp. Today marked the beginning of the Toronto Maple Leafs training camp which historically always begins with media day. Upon his arrival, Marner took to the podium to address the media.
Before receiving even a single question, the young forward decided to set the stage for the season. Marner immediately told all reporters in attendance that he had no intentions of speaking about his contract situation. This was a far cry from what the Leafs saw last season when
Auston Matthews spoke openly about his desire to remain in Toronto.
Rumors have circulated all summer that the Maple Leafs had intended to find Marner of fresh start this season. However, his no movement clause in his contract made that especially difficult. Now heading into the final year of his 6-year contract, it appears it is all or nothing.
Now it appears that the Marner situation could continue to be a distraction throughout the season. With Marner likely seeking a long-term lucrative contract, it will be interesting to see how he plays going forward. Historically, when pressure ramps up he has struggled so betting on himself could end up in a difficult situation.
The Maple Leafs will also have to ask themselves if this is the type of player that will help them get over the hump long term.
